John Barrett Faulkner, a longtime Darien resident who loved to sail, died Sunday, July 25, from sudden heart failure. He was 49.

Born April 29, 1961, Mr. Faulkner was the son of Susan Ott Faulkner and the late John C. Faulkner III.

Mr. Faulkner attended Darien schools, graduated from Brewster Academy in Wolfeboro, N.H., and attended Keene State University. He was an avid sailor and a former member of Noroton Yacht Club.

Mr. Faulkner was passionate about tag sales and eagerly yearned for the next great find. He embodied the true “Yankee Spirit,” his family said, seeing value in used items and having an uncanny knack for fixing them.

Mr. Faulkner will be remembered best for being a good man, his family said. “He was a faithful son, trustworthy and loyal friend, and kind brother and uncle,” they said. “He was honest and selfless, and never failed to put others before himself. Although often late, he was always there when you needed him. Barry focused on the human aspects of life, remembering the importance of kindness and doing for others. His unfailing sense of humor and riotous laugh will be sorely missed.”

“Although his young death was a shock, we can take solace in knowing that Barry, a devout Baptist, would have rejoiced in being called home by his Lord,” his family said.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by his sister Sarah Faulkner; sister and brother-in-law Cynthia and David Callahan; niece Rebekah Leff and nephew Joshua Leff; and a large circle of loving friends, his family said.

A memorial service will be held Sunday, Aug. 1, at 1:30 at the Calvary Baptist Church, 988 Post Road, Darien.
